Dear Mr. Chung:
This is in reply to your June 4, 1997 letter within which you requested my
attendance and those involved in the investigation of the fire interviews in
question at the June 17, 1997 meeting of the Committee on Finance.
With the concurrence of the Fire Department we have undertaken an
investigation into the fire interview matter. The Hawaii Fire Fighters' Association,
while having filed a grievance calling for an independent investigation into this
matter, was agreeable to allowing us to continue our investigation and to wait
for our findings and conclusions.
Your June 4 letter leads me to conclude that you wish the Committee on
Finance to be involved in the investigation of this matter. As such, I see no
reason for continuing our investigation and will in fact, suspend our investigation
pending action by the Committee on Finance.
I do not intend to disclose any information relative to our investigation of the fire
interview matter until such time that our investigation is completed. I do not
anticipate our investigation and final report being completed by June 17.

If you need other information outside of our investigation, please call me at the
time the matter is taken up by the Committee. I have a civil service commission
meeting and hearing scheduled for June 17 to attend to also.
