MARY M. KATAYAMA
From Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro, dated January 20,
1994, submitting for confirmation the following
appointment to the Planning Commission, to replace Jay
Hanson of Kona, whose term has expired:
Mary M. Katayama, an Independent, and a life-time
resident of Hawaii. Since October 1993, she has
been a Project Coordinator for the Department of
Education, and prior to that was a registered
nurse for 32 years with the Department of Health.
She is a member of 12 community organizations.
Mrs. Katayama, if approved, will fill an at-large seat
and will serve a five-year term to end December 31,
1998.

HAWAII COUNTY CODE TO CREATE A NEW CHAPTER RELATING TO
PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE SHORELINE AND MOUNTAIN AREAS

From Planning Commission Chairman Donald L. Manalili,
dated January 27, 1994, informing that at their
January 20, 1994 meeting, they voted to continue the
public hearing on Bill 535 to enable the Planning
Director time to redraft the bill with the assistance
of the Corporation Counsel.
States that the Commission fully supports public access
to the shoreline and mountain areas; however, the bill
in its present form must be amended to address several
issues presented during the public hearings. The
Council will be informed when the hearing is scheduled.
Comm. 484.06: COUNCIL INITIATED PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO
CHAPTER 23 (SUBDIVISION CONTROL CODE), HAWAII COUNTY
CODE, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO FARM LOT SUBDIVISIONS
(BILL 106 DRAFT 3)
From Planning Commission Chairman Donald L. Manalili,
dated January 27, 1994, informing that at their
January 20, 1994 meeting, they voted to continue the
public hearing on Bill 106, Draft 3, to enable the
Planning Director time to redraft the bill with the
assistance of the Corporation Counsel.
States while the Commission endorses the concept,
questions regarding the appropriateness of merely
amending the Subdivision Code have been raised and that
other provisions of the Hawaii County Code may need to
be concurrently amended. The Council will be informed
when the hearing is scheduled.
