Aloha kakahialca, Chairman Arakald and members cf thy: Fain Island County Council. The
Office of Hawaiian Affairs, whose goal and responsibili'cy is to secure enduring justice for
Hawaiians, supports the intent of Res. 114-97 (Dra`ri 31; :elating to the Preservation of
Hunting Rights in Hawaii.
- The Office of Hawaiian Affairs understands the inipoY(a± c_; of pig hunting for the subsistence
of many families. We are very aware that in several of c~~r communities, pig hunting is the
difference between a family's ability to survive or not. 'n these situations, pig hunting is not
a sport, it is a necessity,
At the same time, however, we are keenly aware of thcs chamage pigs cause to our forests.
Many of Hawaii's most vulnerable plants are forever loss because of the damage caused by
pig populations. Therefore, we urge this Council to uG~:': ;1 strict management system that
