RE: PRESENTATION BY THE HONORABLE MAYOR LINDA LINGLE:
HUMAN SERVICE GRANTS AND TRANSITIONAL HOUSING
Please be informed that the Honorable Mayor Linda Lingle will be addressing the Committee on
Human Services and Economic Development at its August 5, 1997 meeting. I have asked
Mayor Lingle to share with us some of the programs and procedures utilized by Maui County's
Department of Housing and Human Concerns. As the Chairman of the Committee, I would like
to propose that we make it a priority to improve the way Hawaii County works with our Human
Service providers. I am especially interested in improving the way we evaluate and distribute
non-profit grants. It is my hope that the information Mayor Lingle shares with us will aid our
efforts to make these improvements.
I had the pleasure of visiting Maui County to learn about their Department of Housing and
Human Concerns two years ago. I was impressed with their operation, especially the way they
evaluate, review and distribute County funds to non-profit Human Service providers. I was also
impressed with their Transitional Housing project which has proven to be very successful.
It is my hope that this meeting will provide useful information to the Council. If you have any
suggestions, comments or questions, please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you.
