Regarding: Proposed General Plan Revisions
Dear Planning Committee Chair and Members,
My family has owned property between Keauhou Bay and Kealakekua Bay for over one
hundred years. We own approximately 500 acres which extends from the Mamalahoa
Highway down to the ocean. The property has been used primarily for cattle ranching
and coffee farming.
We are o os to our property below the old railroad, or the current new Hokuli'a by-
pass highway, being categorized as "Important Agricultural Land" as is proposed in
Draft 1 of the New General Plan. This land is steep, rocky and arid. The average
rainfall is probably less than 20 inches a year. We have only been able to graze cattle
on this land during the wet months when there is some grass. Even this usage has not
been profitable for us. Very little would grow on this land without extensive and
expensive irrigation and land preparation. "Important Agricultural Land" would be a
complete miss categorization of this area. It is my belief that all land owners who have
similar land in this area would agree. There is much good agricultural land on the Big
Island and this area is not among that type of land.
We hope you will take our request into serious consideration.
