Gentlemen:
Tt looks to me like the county is Facing a big problem. i refer to the impenaing traffic
problems around the island. We probably have ten times as much buildable land as Oahu has, and
they need a ten lane highwyy to handle their traffic. At the rate that we aze building, it won't be
long before we have to at least double the capacity of our roans. in Honolulu the higtrvays are of
many lanes but they are short, With the tong distances or. the Big Island, do we have the finances
to build the required highways? Arid do we want all this traffic for our rural island?
Even with the wrrent zoning, we face major traffic problems soon. So, l would think t}tat
the Council and the Mayor and the Planning Department would be trying to find ways io slow
down development. But instead T see variances being given to allow developers to greatly
irerease the number of homes that they can put on a tract of land. In fact T see the government
encouraging the build-out ofthe island. It seerns that. when a new development is being
considered, only the effects an t:-te immediate neighborhood are considered. ;3ui iGG now families
movuig iYO Hilo will not drive only in Hilo, but will also add to the congestion in Waimea and
Kona -obviously. To encourage development without also planning for the expanded highways
that will be needed is vet shott sighted. It is also sad to see how liixie the Huai qualities of this
island are valued.
