Subject: Sign Variance Request -Island Fruits/Hula Brothers, Inc.
TMK 1-7-13:106
Dear Chairperson Yagong:
BACKGROUND
Hula Brothers, Inc. grows tropical fruits (Rambutan, Lychee,
Longan, Starfruit, Lime, Tangelo, Salak, etc...) on our three farm
locations in Kurtistown. We also do some light processing into juice
and dried products in our certified kitchen at our Huina Rd location.
We sell these products to the public at our Volcano Highway farm
location which is zoned Ag 20. The name of our outlet is "Island
Fruits", although it is owned by Hula Brothers, Inc.
This is a permitted use under the Hawaii County Statutes. We
only sell produce and value added agricultural products from our
own farms and those grown in Hawaii. Our customers include many
local residents and some visitors. We feel that this is an ideal way to
expose the public to our local areas agricultural products.
Future plans call for obtaining a special use permit and
expanding our operations to include facilities where visitors may
walk through our orchards. However, we first need to establish that
we can justify that capital expenditure, by proving to ourselves (and ~ a'
our banker) that our fruit outlet is a viable economic operation. ~ y

CODE REQUIREMIIVT
I would like to apply for a variance for the allowed sign at the
property. Ag zoning allows an 8 square foot sign only. We want to
put up a 32 square foot sign, one consistent with those allowed for
commercial businesses.
PROPOSED SIGN
The proposed sign will be wood with a painted finish done by a
professional sign painter. It will 4' X 8' in size, double sided and
mounted on painted wooden posts. The over all height will be 9'. It
will be mounted perpendicular to the street within the property line.
It will not block any vehicular vision or adversely affect traffic
safety.
JUSTIFICATION FOR VARIANCE
The size of the sign we are requesting is consistent with those
allowed for commercial businesses. This tastefully done sign is
needed to alert visitors on the Volcano highway to the opportunity to
taste Hawaiian grown agricultural products.
Sincerely,
L~+~-cam ~?~r,~.~,..t
