l~car Councilman Chung,
I am writing you out of concern for what the County is doing in our cturent landfill
problem. Several years ago, ow family decided to do whatever we could to minimize the
amount of rubbish we took to the transfer station by removing as much of the paper and
cardboard as possible and taking those items fi)r recycling. I was amazed to fmd that the 2
to 3 bags per week was reduced to T bag every week or less. We were not paid for the
paper we took to be recycled, but I felt that it was important for each of us to do his share.
Two weeks ago, I discovered that F,nvironrrrental Recycling was no longer accepting mired
paper or magazines. I was told that it no longer was economically feasible to continue this
part of the recycling business. This means that my load to the landfill will he larger, and
that what was recycled is going into a hole in the ground.
T find it hard to believe that the County is doing virtually nothing [o promote recycling as a
n,Pans tr, lessen the amount goir~ into the landfill, especially given the cturent mess it fords
itself in. We've had all these years of little efforts that could have grown into a community
ethic of recycling given help from the powers that be, but every time somebody tried to
start something, it seemed that big government was against such an effort succeeding. Isn't
it time to stars the ball rolling'> If it takes a subsidy so the people bringing in paper and
cardboard get a few cents per pound and the company handling the recycling makes a little
money, wouldn~t the reduction in material gouig into the landfill be worth it, let alone t}re
ecological benefity?
I was impressed by vow efforts doing the election in going house to house to meet the
people you wanted to represent. At the time, I felt that your energy and willingness to
work were just what we needed. Could some of that energy be channeled to tlus concern'.>
