Council Chairman Gary Safarik and Members of the County Council County of Hawaii Hilo, HI 96720 Dear Chairman Safarik and Council Members: It is my pleasure to nominate the following individuals to the County of Hawaii Fire Commission: 5~' Council ®istrict ~ - Mr. Wil Okabe is a 42-year resident of Hawaii and currently is a teacher at Hilo High School. Mr. Okabe is on the Board of Directors for the Fast Hawaii Coalition for the Homeless. He has served as past chair for the County Police Commission, past vice president of the Andrews Association, past vice president and president of the Muni Links Association. Mr. Okabe states that he is a member of the Democratic Party and if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2008. Council ®istrict 9 - Mr. James R. Browne is a 6-year resident of Hawaii. Mr. Browne is currently retired. He serves on the Waikoloa Village Association Fire Wise Committee and the Korean War Veterans Kona #279. He is also a recipient and member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. In addition, he is a member of the Marine Corps Association. Mr. Browne states that he is not affiliated with any political party and if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2009. Council ®istrict 6 - Ms. Karen M. Kudlo is a 10'/z year resident of Hawaii and is the self- employed/owner of the Treasure Island Thrift Shack. She has served on the County Family Violence Advisory Committee, and has also served as vice-president of the Board of Directors of Kainaliu Town, a Little League vice president and president/treaasurer of her school's Parent-Teacher Association. Ms. Kudlo states that she is not affiliated with any political party and if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2008. She will replace Mr. Clifford Whitney who has resigned. Lincoln Ashida, Corporation Counsel Last Council meeting- April 6, 2005 Nawai 'i Counry is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer FIRE COMMISSION 08/02/04 Purpose: Appoints Fire Chief, advise and make recommendations to the Chief on the operations of the department and its personnel actions. Review the annual budget and make recommendations thereon to the Mayor and Council. Submit an annual report to the Mayor and Council on its activities. Cannot intertere with the administrative affairs of the department. Authority: Hawaii County Charter, Section 6-4.5. Appointment: Mayor with Council approval. Normal 5-year staggered terms. Full Membership: Nine members. Specific Representation: One member from each council district. Requirements: No more than five shall belong officially to the same political party. Meetings: No specific requirements. Financial Disclosure: Members must file Financial Disclosure within 20 working days of taking office. Thereafter, annual disclosures must be filed on or before January 31. The disclosures are confidential and will be kept on file by the Board of Ethics. County Code, Chapter 2, Section 2-91.1. Reappointment: Following the expiration of a term, no member may be reappointed for at least two years except for one and two year "terms." Qualities: Respected by the community as being community-minded and oriented. Able to focus on the community needs as a whole without catering to special or self-interest.
