HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0423.001 1996-1998 1 RE: Bill No. 122 (Federal Grant-Child Care Development Accomit) NO"CE: all information below is as per Angela Thomas, Chair of the Mayor's Committee on Youth (322-4156) !'E RECENED ~-7-- ~y- ~ Historical Backround County Council Started with the governor's Good Beginnings Alliance (GBA) three years ago the GBA was a group assembled to address early childhood development ~ the GBA was given 18 months to develop a master plan in order to receive funds to formulate a master plan the GBA became a 501(3c) non-profit the state master plan calls for each county to develop their own master plan (the county plan is available at the Mayor's office-contact Jean Fiernes ext. 8211) FY96-97 mone~(65.000) ~ breakdown $50,000 to hire contract a coordinator (Leilani Hino 882-7024), $15,000 spent on computer equipment and travel expenses ~ money path: originally federal grant went to the Governor's Oltice on Children and Youth and then to counties (OCY was scaled down) now federal grant goes to DHS then to counties ~ originally asked for $120,000 from DIIS to complete the counties plan and fm~m working group DHS provided the initial $65,000 with no guaranteed future funding and then came back with the $60,000 for FY97-98 the computer money was spent to get an G-mail account and to establish a data base for the organization along with the Regional Cow~cil on early childhood education, a Tcen Group Subcommittee was established (headed by Felicity Johnson 322-6488) Possible Areas of Interest Regarding Youth Activities follow-up on the work of the Teen Group (which has a couple teens participating in the subcommittee work) ~ Kauai has some good programs including a teens council or teens in government program (contact: Sharon Agnew) Angela "Fhomas said that the group will actually want to rely more on private funding to do their work but she didn't elaborate too much on their fund raising plans c~ ;ua ~zs, o~ _ 11Y AR FN~O 0 P-R_ roses' red ~vti~r~ Lt. !s~ Ret'. n++te SE'P 1 7 f~
