Council District 3 - Mr. Alan A. Salavea is a life long resident of Hawaii and currently serves as the Ohana Mentoring Network Program Coordinator for the Resource Center at the University of Hawaii. He also served as a coordinator for the Youth Builder's Program with the County of Hawai'i's Prosecutors Office. Mr. Salavea also serves on the Board of the Opihikao Congregational Church. Mr. Salavea states that he is not affiliated with any political party and if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 2007, replacing Mr. Bill Thibadeau who has passed on. Council District 4 - Mr. Andrew S. Iwashita is a 51-year resident of Hawaii and a self employed attorney. He currently serves as president of the Aloha Exchange Club and Waiakea High School P.T.S.A. He has served as past president of the Waiakea High School Band Boosters and a past District Director with the Hawaii Jaycees. Mr. Iwashita states that he is a member of the Democratic Party. If confirmed he will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2009, replacing Mr. Francis Smith whose term expired on December 31, 2004. Council District 7 - Mr. Rodney H. Watanabe is a life long resident of Hawaii and is currently employed at the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union. He has served as District Chair and Vice-Chair for the Boy Scouts of America and has served with Kauhale Pohala (non-profit homeless project). Mr. Watanabe states that he is not affiliated with any political party and if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2009. The Planning Commission has a full agenda for their April meeting and we are hopeful that our nominees can be seated prior to the April meeting. Watanabe Chris Yuen, Director Ivan Torigoe, Deputy Corporation Counsel PLANNING COMMISSION 08/30104 Purpose: To advise the Mayor, Council and Planning Director in all matters concerning planning and land use matters; to review and make recommendations regarding the General Plan, subdivision and zoning ordinances and other planning rules and regulations; to establish planning rules and regulations and to conduct public hearings. Authority: Hawaii County Charter, Section 6-4.3. Appointment: Mayor with Council confirmation. Five year staggered terms. Full Membership: Nine members. Specific Representation: One member from each council district. (Charter Amendment 1998). Requirements: No more than five shall belong officially to the same political party. Commission members attend the annual Hawaii Congress of Planning Officials in late summer/early fall, which is a three-day conference held on a different island each year. Meetings: Regular meetings are held at least once a month at the County Council Room in Hilo. Special meetings can be scheduled as needed. Financial Disclosure: Members must file Financial Disclosure within 20 working days of taking the oath of office. Thereafter, annual disclosures must be filed on or before January 31. The disclosures are confidential and will be kept on file by the Board of Ethics. County Code, Chapter 2, Section 2-91.1. Reappointment: Following the expiration of a term, no member may be reappointed for at least two years . Qualities: Respected by the community as being community-minded and oriented.
