HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0094.005 2004-2006 Ku'ikahi Mediation Center: A Program of The Island of Hawaii YMCA Hawau Couety Noo-ProSt Greet Preseetstioe 11:00 a.m. 7&arsday, March 10, 2005 History/introduction • Serving the East Hawaii community since 1983, providing dispute resolution, training and facilitation to individuals, families and groups. • Opened 299 cases serving 893 clients in Program Year 2003/2004. • Current cadre of 35 professionally-trained, active volunteer mediators. • Emphasis on wmplex neighbor-neighbor conflict incl. Civil TROs, family and divorce disputes, workplace conflicts, Special Education issues, Civil Rights issues, criminal cases deemed to be appropriate. • Reduces numbers of calls requiring police response and reduces backlog in the prosecutorial and court systems. • Mediation creates Success, Sohttions and Satisfaction: o Is economical and produces rapid settlement. o Preserves on-going relationships and/or terminates relationships more amicably and empowers clients to create positive change. o Produces more workable outcomes tailored to clients' situations and requirements, increasing compliance and durability. o Produces solutions that may resolve elements of the conflict that aze not susceptible to legal determination. Accomp/is/rments • Enhanced community capacity by providing facilitation training to Community Association Boards, primarily in the Puna District, under a Hawai i Community Foundation grant in Program Year 2003/2004. • 85% of clients indicated their satisfaction with mediation services and 90% indicated they would recommend mediation to others, exceeding the 80% satisfaction metric established for client satisfaction in Program Yeaz 2003/2004 Future Plans • Ongoing collaboration with Prosecutor's Office, Police Department and Planning Department to ensure appropriate referrals to mediation. • Increase quality and numbers of trained and active volunteer mediators to 70 by end of Program Year 2005/2006 to respond to increased need in our community. • Continue upgrading infonaation technology and data analysis to support professional training and staffing initiatives of KMC • Provide at least 700 clients with quality mediation and facilitation services in Program Yeaz 2005-2006.
