Subject: requesting funding in the budget for a land cdnservation fund

Dear County Council members, I am writing in support of including funds for the purchase of conservation land in this
year's county budget. Our native habitats are precious and critical to our way of life. When we lose our native inhabitants
we lose what is unique and special about <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-
com:office:smarttags" />Hawai~i. The number of home annual constructions has nearly doubled since 2001 and is likely to
continue to increase. Most of our privately owned land has no legal protection and owners tend to bulldoze their entire
parcel just to build family homes. Fragile native rainforest is being unnecessarily destroyed and replaced by lawns. Parcels
are being subdivided into smaller and smaller lots thus increasing the number of houses/acre. This alarming rate of
development is threatening the survival of our native habitats and species. If we do not take aggressive steps to protect
our land now, we will loose it, and once it is gone we cannot get it back. Let's not miss this opportunity to protect our way of
life for future generations.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"
Sincerely yours,
Dr Laura Brezinsky `
