This funding, provided by a U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant and administered by the Hawaii Community Foundation, is part of the Big Island Meth Initiative and the PA's Drug Task Force project. The PA has just been awarded second year funding to continue its Drug Task Force project. Enclosed is a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the Hawaii Community Foundation for the Drug Task Force project. Also enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating the COPS Grant funds to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney's account. Funding is part of a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The project is staffed with two deputy prosecuting attorneys. Efforts are directed toward working with County, State and Federal law enforcement officials in prosecuting individuals and organizations distributing large quantities of ice and other drugs. These positions complement the Police Department's enforcement efforts by providing prosecution services with regard to warrant review, charging decisions, preliminary hearings, grand jury, trial and appeals.
