The State Department of Transportation Public Affairs -Sate Community Program is providing additional funding to reduce the number of motor vehicle collisions resulting in igjuries and fatalities caused by speeding drivers, bringing the total grant appropriation to $82.000. l~he additional funds will he used to purchase two speed board displays with trailers whidi will alert drivers of the speed they are traveling in hopes of reducing those that exceed the limit. 'Ibis funding, provided by a U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant and administered by the Hawaii Community Foundation, is part of the Big Island Meth Initiative and the PA's Drug 'Cask Force project. The PA has just been awarded second year funding to continue its Drug Task Force project. The Hawaii County Police Department's Microwave Relocation and System Renovation pr~jcct was initiated to replace the existing microwave communications system used by a variety of public safety agencies. 'I~he project involves the analysis of the current facilities, agreements with co-locators, acquisition of tower sites. tower modification and new tower construction, equipment purchase and installation, and ultimately, the transition to the new equipment. 'I~his appropriation is needed for unanticipated costs related to delays to the project which have resulted in cost overruns and for cost increases due to changes in the construction design at two (2) sites.
