Dear Editor
Thank you for your article regarding the Superferry. The ferry proponents are trying to avoid legislative
mandates requiring an EIS for this project by threatening cancellation of the project if approvals are not
received in a time frame that precludes any careful analysis of the many significant land and sea impacts.
This arrogance illustrates a sad truth about Hawaiian legislators and administrative decision makers. That
is, that they are often taken advantage of by business interests proposing seemingly attractive projects that
will go forward only if' certain subsidies, tax breaks, permitting shortcuts, etc., are provided. These predators
rely on the Island traits that avoid confrontation (asking tough questions), tend to believe what companies
say, and a rather naive understanding of private business practices and principles.
It's hard to blame the Superferry for wanting to take advantage of our State tax dollars, bonding capacity,
State and County harbors and adjacent lands and our fragile ocean environment and creatures for their
private gain. But we don't have to agree.
The Superferry may be a good idea, but, after attending a number of meetings I can't even find out what
infrastructure changes are being proposed. How can the State even consider a project of this magnitude,
without an EIS. How can we do an EIS without knowing what is proposed. That there is even the possibility
of approving the Superferry based on current data (or lack thereof) is outrageous.
Let's not be blackmailed into a poor decision making.
