Dear County Council for Hawai' I Island:
I live and work in Ka u, a very special place in Hawaii that is undergoing a
revival after the closure of the sugar era. This revival revolves around expansion
of Volcanoes National Park to surround our villages of Na alehu and Pahala,
renovation of historic buildings, preservation of archaeological sites and the
unfettered views to the ocean from Highway 11.
One of the special views is Honu'apo, an often photographed vista from the
highway turn-out as you leave Na alehu and head towards Volcano. This is the
first astonishing glimpse for any visitor reaching the vast volcano coast and the
Ka u desert with its rugged and untouched shoreline. This view must be
preserved.
Honu'apo also has wetlands, estuaries important for fish birds and turtles. The
coast has many inlets where honu live, and there is much archaeology. In
addition, there are the remnants of sugar -the old wharf, landings and remains of
the mill that are interesting in their stone work.
Most importantly for our local people and our visitors, Honu~apo is one of the tew
accessible ocean front recreational places in all of Ka'u, an area bigger than
Oahu. Its shoreline,offers trails for walking, places to relax and opportunities for
fishing in the ponds and on the shore.
Please help the community make Honu'apo a large community park with places
to take long walks along the shore and the fishponds. Our community is growing
and we need to preserve these places now for the future.
