Dear Hawaii County Council:
As a Ka'u resident who grew up on the Big Island and Oahu, I have
seen the changes that various types of development have brought to
our island home. Now, as a parent, grandparent, and high school
teacher who lives and works in Ka u, I must set an example to our
youth, by presenting this testimony and encouraging them to become
involved in protection of our shoreline which we dearly love.
We have been talking about the proposed development along the
Ka'u shore in our classrooms and from the student response I can tell
you that they speak with pride about the Ka'u Coast, about its natural
beauty and their cherished lifestyle that involves fishing, diving,
surfing and the traditional gathering practices of their families.
The students are also involved in protection of the Endangered
Honu'ea, the hawksbill turtle and are often invited to work with the
Volcano National Parks scientists when the hatchlings come out of
the nest and head to the ocean. The students realize that it is not just
their family's lifestyle that is threatened but also the wildlife that needs
our protection.
I support the appropriations of funds for the acquisition of Honu'apo
for a coastal park and efforts to help preserve Ka u's 80 miles of
coast.
