Honorable Councilmen, _
I wish to express my support for Bill 53, the proposal to create funding for the purchase of the lands surrounding
Honuapo Pond. This land is indeed in dire need of protection by the county and state.
This beautiful coastal park is the main coastal recreation area and playground of the people of Na'alehu,
Waiohinu, and South Point communities. This is one of the few spots that is easily accessible from the highway in
all of South Hawaii Island. Expanding the park to include the land around the pond would insure ocean access
and preservation of the views of the sacred mountains to the north. Ever increasing numbers of locals and
tourists visit this peaceful park each year. There is no greater legacy we can leave future generations than
protected natural areas and an open shoreline.
Please do the right thing and vote in favor of Bill 53.
