Since ground termites need soil and do not live in lava rock, this requirement is, for much of Puna, environmentally unsound. The pesticide companies give only a guarantee of 1 to 2 years. Organic farmers can loose their certification for 3 years from the spraying. How much leaches into water systems or blows around into the yard? Previous termite poisons have been found to be very harmful to humans. Since there are small areas of soil in Puna,(in Leilani Estates, Kapoho, and Keaau,) it is difficult to designate the spraying by areas therefore I suggest that the code be changed to allow owner-builders to have the option of spraying or not. Since being sued is a major consideration in the building code, building contractors would still have to spray. Thank you for your consideration, Elfin Sand H.P.P. Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
