Dear Councilman 7acobson This e-mail is to express our strong support for Bills 78 and 79, on Public access and preservation of Natural aesources. ask anyone in Ka u what issue they would like to see the Council support, it is the initiative to preserve our coastline. Unless funds are made available as a Bond or as a precent of taxes to buy the coastal land, it will be lost forever. Ka u's coastline is the last unspoiled coastline anywhere on the four major islands of Hawaii. This is one legacy we can give the next generation. other counties have taken the lead to use some of the revenue from rising property taxes to preserve unspoiled areas still undeveloped. Why not Hawaii County? on Maui, the community was polled and there was overwhelming support to set aside a few % of revenue for land preservation. If people in this county were polled, the result would be the same. Please ask the Council to show vision and leadership by setting aside funds for real preservation of unspoiled land, our most precious resource. If not used this way, the Mayor will likely use the extra funds to appoint more bureaucrats. a Bond to provide a one time purchase of coastal land is also very appropriate. This would almost certainly be matched by the State and the Federal Government and it would impress eveyone if the council took a lead to set aside specific funds for purchase of unspoiled land.
