I am writing in support of the nomination of William E. Smith to a position in the Office
of the Clerk.
I have known Bill Smith since he was a per diem judge in Family Court on Oahu in the
late 1980's. Back then, Mr. Smith had a reputation for being a no-nonsense, fair but firm
judge. I have also known Mr. Smith as a colleague, since he moved to Hawaii County in
the early 1990's. Although we are sometimes on opposing sides, I have always known
Mr. Smith to be thorough in his preparation and accurate in his knowledge of the law.
Although Mr. Smith is considered a tough, aggressive prosecutor, he is also
compassionate and understanding when the situation warrants it.
If he is appointed, I am confident that Mr. Smith will continue to serve the County of
Hawaii diligently and honorably.
Thank you for the opportunity to express my support of Mr. Smith. Again, I respectfully
urge the members of the County Council to confirm the nomination.
