Re: Bill 53 Honuapo Preservation
Aloha Chairman Higa, County Council members, ladies and gentlemen,
I am honored to provide additional testimony in support of Bill 53. I have previously
provided written and verbal testimony at the second reading of Bill 53, so I will let that
stand on its own merit.
Again, for the record, my ohana, extended ohana and I strongly and enthusiastically
support passage of Bill 53. ~~e are committed to collaborating and working cooperatively
with the County and other entities in the efforts to preserve Honuapo.
This remains a vital, important and irreplaceable natural support for our community.
Honuapo continues to provide vivid links and information to our past; it has significant
importance with respect to our culture, carries historical and archeological evidence as to
the ancestors of this area. Additionally, it is an ecological support for wildlife, some
which are on the protected and endangered species registry.
VVe believe that the commitment to preserving Honuapo is in the spirit of healing for our
culture and aina by allowing Kanaka Maoli to again participate in, be responsible to and
take ownership of what is, in reality, our birthright.
