Aloha,
In an effort to accurately gauge public support for the proposed Hawaii Superferry, we commissioned Honolulu-based
marketing research firm Market Trends Pacific, Inc. to conduct a statewide survey of public perceptions and opinions about
the Superferry.
The results have been very satisfying and prove most Hawaii residents in fact support our high-speed, ocean-going
interisland ferry service.
In March and April, a random telephone survey wa<. conducted of 1,320 residents from all four Hawaii counties. And we
have been encouraged by the very strong level of support shown by residents statewide. Enclosed is a copy of the
executive summary of the survey and a copy of the survey questionnaire.
Most Hawaii residents polled - 96 percent -said the Superferry offers the promise of an alternative means of
transportation.
Eighty-seven percent of residents polled said the Superferry will make travel between the islands more affordable,

Eighty-six percent said the Superferry will stimulate Hawaii's economy.
Given these perceptions, it is not surprising that 87 I~ercent reported having an extremely favorable or positive attitude
toward the Superferry. Only three percent expresseii a negative attitude.
Support for the state's funding of harbor improvements to accommodate the Superferry was also very high with 87 percent
strongly or somewhat supporting it.

Although some people have concerns about the pot~:ntial impacts of the Superferry, the majority of residents reject the
notion it will cause traffic congestion (59 percent "false") or interfere with club activities, such as canoe paddling (69 percent
"false"). A solid majority, 62 percent, also rejected the fear that the Superferry may threaten or endanger marine life. And
while 55 percent of residents surveyed felt the Superferry would not result in a spread of alien species, about 30 percent, or
three in 10, were concerned about this.
Residents in all parts of the state appeared to be into:rested in using the Superferry. About three out of four residents - or
76 percent -were very likely to consider the Hawaii Superferry for their next interisland trip, and another 18 percent
indicated they would be somewhat likely to use it.

Residents in this survey take an average of 3.25 inte island trips a year. The high cost of interisland travel is the single most
important reason for not traveling given by 48 perce t of those not taking interisland trips.

Please listen as I read a description of the Hawaii Superferry. The Hawaii Superferry will provide
transportation between Neighbor Islands. The Superferry can take you and your vehicle, whether it's a
motorcycle, car, SUV with ahorse-trailer, school bus, van or semi-truck. It will sail twice daily from
Honolulu to Kahului, Maui and back, daily from Honolulu to Nawiliwili, Kauai and back, and daily
from Honolulu to Kawaihae, on the Big Island and back. Sailing time to Maui or Kauai is three hours;
it's four hours to the Big Island. Fares on the Superferry will be about half the price of flying. Other
features of the Superferry include a cruise ship type interior, wheel chair access, three restaurants, a
shop, a bar, a children's playroom with jungle gym, big screen movies and television, high speed
wireless Internet access, and a video arcade. A ride on the Superferry will be as stable as any large
cruise ship in Hawaiian waters. These ships are in use as ferries all over the world and have a perfect
safety record in 15 years of operation.

The Hawaii Superferry is working with the State's Department of Transportation, Harbors Division, to
finalize plans for harbor facilities. The plans are designed to use existing facilities at each harbor
alongside other important commercial and recreational users. The Superferry's will be in full
compliance regarding its approach to marine mammals. For example, routes will concentrate in deep
waters and to further reduce the chance of encountering whales, routes will be changed during whale
season. The Superferry will have policies in place to limit the migration of exotic species. For example,
only plants or cuttings that have been inspected and sealed by Hawaii Department of Agriculture Plant
Quarantine Office on the island of departure will be allowed on board. Only domestic cats and dogs will
be allowed to travel as pets with their owners, either in vehicles or in on-board kennels on the vehicle
deck. No other animals including rodents, reptiles, fish or birds will be permitted except HDOA
registered livestock and poultry in approved vehicles.

As you may know, the State of Hawaii is in the process of approving $40 million dollars to fund harbor
improvements to accommodate the Superferry. Harbor improvements include ramps, barges, queuing
areas, security fencing, passenger gangways and shelters. The Superferry will pay harbor usage tees to
