RE: Requesting to present the Earth Machine Home Composting system and
educational video developed for the Department of Environmental Management,
Solid Waste Division, Recycling Section
Dear Hawaii County Council Members:
Recycle Hawaii would like to request the opportunity to present information and a 20-
minute video to the County Council on a new outreach program- "Composting is
Recycling Too!"- an adjunct to the popular Composting and Vermiculture (worm
composting) home composting workshops we have been offering islandwide.
Beginning on the 35`h anniversary of Earth Day, in cooperation with the County's
Department of Environmental Management, we will be offering a free Earth Machine to
all Hawaii Island schools. Made from recycled plastic, the Earth Machine is a specially
designed bin for turning greenwaste into compost. It is compact and completely enclosed
preventing excess moisture and pests from entering the compost. As used by the average
household to compost greenwaste and food scraps, nearly ] 0 tons of waste maybe
diverted from landfills over the 10-year estimated life of the Earth Machine.
Schools that accept this offer will have the means to impart to their students an
interesting environmental science project while turning cafeteria kitchen scraps and
grcenwaste clippings into a valuable landscaping resource that will benefit their campus
soil and bcautitication projects. This program will also divert greenwaste from our island

landfills helping to extend their lives and decrease greenhouse gas emissions and leachatc
that could work its way into our groundwater and streams.
Each Earth Machinc will be delivered with an instructional DVD or VHS tape. Recycle
Hawaii would also like to make this offer to all County Council persons to utilize a unit
for demonstration purposes. Using the Earth Machine could result in turning from 30-50
percent of your household kitchen and yard waste into compost for your gardens.
The "Composting is Recycling Too" program has a proven track record on the island of
Kauai, where more than 900 Earth Machines have been distributed since October, 2001.
Recycle Hawaii would be happy to make this presentation at your earliest convenience.
