Subject: Real estate tax
.
Aloha County council.
I received good news and bad in my county real estate tax bills.
Good: my residence taxes decreased greatly; bad, my rental
condo taxes increased 50%'overnighC. I would have had to raise
rent by $100/month to break even, contrary [o aiding affordable housing.
A single working woman was tenant.
Not a personal problem- we sold the house, evicted the tenant and moved into
the condo. Soon we will have benefit of the low homeowner rates with senior/
geriatric offsets. Incidentally, the condo tax is triple that of a like unit on Oahu, and
many more services are provided there. So much for encouraging affordable
housing.
While being a beneficiary of the county property tax formula, 1 find it the
most unfair and untFiendly properly tax 1 have ever encoumered. People who cannot
vote for council members, who use far fewer county services than 1, as par[
year residents, pay three to five times the taxes on like properties. While
the County may call this the Aloha Spirit, 1 see it as the most xenophobic example
of taxation without representation imagineable. They cannot vote here, let us sock it
to them!
A fair tax on property- residential- is a rate per thousand, period. Ours has so
many gimmicks that I would he hard pressed [o express it as a mathematical
formula. I would urge consideration of a fair real property tax.
