Dear Mayor Kim and Council Chair Stacy Higa,
I am a Big Island kama'aina who has returned home after living in California
and Oahu, and I fully support the proposed Land Conservation Fund for the
Big Island. In my lifetime I have experienced firsthand the changes in the
quality of life due to rapid development and shortsighted planning without
careful regard to the landscape. Please support Bill 78 to protect the
natural beauty of our island.
I grew up in Hawaii and I remember the unspoiled places which now no longer
exist. As residents we have the awesome responsibility to decide the future
quality of life for our families. I think that you agree: where we live is
unique. Hawaii is small and isolated, and changes to our landscape have a
cascading effect on our daily lives. Prosperity means nothing without clean
water and air, without a healthy place to live.
On recent trip to Honolulu to my early childhood home in Ewa Beach I was
alarmed to see how much the coastline had changed, how crowded it had become
and how much traffic has become a frustrating problem for those who live
there. On the Big Island we still have the chance to preserve the real
Hawaii before it becomes something to "escape from" like Honolulu. Please
give Bill 78 the full support needed to help keep the Big Island beautiful.
