To: Chairman Higa and Council Members:
As part of the public record I wish to state that I am in disagreement with Mayor Kim in wanting the county council
to approve the $14.5M recycling facility. It sounds a long time off, a one location solution very expensive with
complex machinery and many avenues for expensive problems only specialists can solve.
Instead can we build on what we have going thanks to you!--all glass recycled is reused ON the island. Bravo.
But not all glass is recycled. Could we go for curb side pick up of glass and aim for 80% of all glass coming to the
island being recycled?. If glass became so easy to dispose fewer containers would be purchased. There would
be less rinsing and fewer trips to redemption/recycling centers. Or, maybe we could have curb side pick up to
include cans, paper and plastic--separated. Safeway already recycles cardboard and plastic sacks to the
mainland. Could we work with them? How about a campaign to reduce plastic sac use- And, maybe we place
paper recycling bins in the post office where most of my friends and myself now leave the majority of our
unsolicited and unwanted paper. Paper might be shredded or used as a component of compost right here On the
island.
Should we aim for recycle machines placed outside stores that sell the products ,stores that would take our
redeemable items and provide the redeemer with a coupon redeemable in the adjoining large grocery or home
product store. The extra penny would help pay for the person needed to oversee the machines.
Large items such as cars are yes a bigger problem. Maybe the car manufacturers, middlemen and buyers will
have to help us solve the disposal problem. Every car imported has surcharges for a round trip.
I realize this is a complex problem, but the solutions (and I think there are many solutions rather than one $14.5M
recyclable facility) should be easy and cheap for consumers and county residents.
As an aside, I wonder if we go back into a process that turned down two presenters, and say yes to one we just
said no to, is not the one who does not get re -admitted going to be upset?

Maybe we need help getting rid of the big items that come to this island. If cars are to be sold here just maybe
the car makers, middlemen and buyers all have to pay a round trip ticket surcharge. I would bet that people
would make, send and buy cars that have longevity, especially if that is part of the determination of surcharges.
