Dear Mr. Higa,
Today, I read an excerpt of an article in the Hilo Tribune Herald where you had proposed a bill to name
Lincoln Park in honor of Dr. Ruth Oda. While there is no question that Dr. Oda was an outstanding
pediatrician in Hilo as well as a civic minded individual, Lincoln Park, however, has been the home of
the Lincoln Wrecker's organization for many, many years. Granted, the organization is not as active as
in the years past, but for all of us who played at Lincoln Park, it is a sacred, hallowed ground. It would
be sacrilegious to rename the park.
I know Dr. Oda's office was close to Lincoln Park on Ponohawai street but she had no ties to the park
itself or the Wreckers organization. There is nn question on my part that Dr. Oda should be honored,
however, I think a more appropriate recognition would be to name a part of Hilo Medical Center in her
memory as well as a tribute to all the patients she treated throughout her brilliant career. I hope the
council will lake this into consideration before a vote is conducted. I know if my classmate and fellow
Wrecker, the late Rudolph (Rudy) Legaspi was still alive, he would have done everything in his power,
politically, to defeat the proposed bill. This letter is just my personal response and in no way represents
the viewpoint of the Lincoln Wreckers Athletic Club.
