RESOLU"PION IN SUPPOR"COP "1'I IH KONA "fRANFIC SAFE"I'Y COMMITTEE AND ITS EFFORTS NOR THE
IMMI?DIATE IMPROVEMIiNT OF MAMALAl10A HIGHWAY BE'T'WEEN MILE MARKERS I1 AND 28
WHEREAS, Mamalahoa Highway. State I lghway 190, is [he most direct and heavily traveled route between
Kailua-Kona and Waimea-l lilo; and
WHEREAS, the portions of highway between mile markers 1 I and 28 is narrow, in some places without
shoulders, bounded by lava rock outcrops, sharp drop-offs, and lacks appropriate sight lines and barriers to insure the
safety of motorists; and
WIIF.RI:AS, the members of the community who experience this road have presented a list of
recommendations to Governor Linda Lingle and the Slate Deparunent of Transportation for improving this section of
the Mamalahoa I lighway, Slate Roule 190; and
WHF.RN:AS, Mamalahoa Highway between mile markers 1 I and 28 is a road of major importance to the
citizens and visitors to I lawai'i and in it's current condition it is a dangerous and inferior road; and
THF,REFORE BN: IT RH:SOVF.D 6Y THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII to support Kona
Traffic Safety Committee and ils community based eflorts for the immediate improvement of the section of Mamalahoa
Highway between mile markers I I and 28; and
BE I"1' FURTHER RESOLVED to ask the State of Hawaii to implement these measures where feasible; and
RF, 1'1' FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk of the County of Hawaii shall transmit copies of this
Resolution to the Oflice of the Governor and the State Department of Transportation.
