Dear Council Members:
I am personnally appealing to each of you to support the CIP funding necessary to allow the Department of
Environmental Management to proceed with the Sort Station.

yet final, but I wanted to let you know what I had in mind.

Solid Waste Soet Station Funding
Dear Chairman Higa and Council Members:
bast year at this time, I asked for your suppoet for C[P funding for both the Sort Station and Transfer
Station funding.
Untoetunately, the decision was the opposite. However, this year, the situation is even more critical
and time sensitive as a result of both RFF Waste to Energy Froposals being disqualified.
Not to belabor the point, but the funding is pact of an overall plan which includes not only the Sort
Station but other improvements to support this entire effort to maximize use of the Hilo Landfill and
minimize the anticipated hauling operations from East to Wcst Hawaii.
Let me point out That:
• The County is already initiating and embracing an aggressive recycling program.
• 'Ehe raced to maximize the use of the Hilo Landfill before the hauling begins.
• The need to reduce the quantity of hauled solid waste by pre-sorting and recycling.
Again I am asking for your support for this program funding that has been tradi4ionally deferred by
previous councils. [n short, let the Department and the Solid Wasfe Division do their jobs and provide
theta the means to do so.
