Dear Chairman Higa, -
During our May meeting, the Kona County Farm Bureau Board of Directors
voted to submit testimony asking you to support Bill 70 serving to direct two
percent of the County's real property tax revenue toward the protection of our
natural resources.
Open coastlines, natural areas, cultural sites and agricultural lands are critical
to Hawaii's economic, cultural, and recreational well-being. Dedicated funding
serving to protect some of these special resources makes economic sense. It
Helps Local farmers stay In dlverslfled agriculture, protects the natural beauty that
serves as the foundation of our tourist industry, protects watersheds.
But investment in the protection of these resources has been grossly
neglected ever tinr.P the (;ounty of Hawaii received the right to collect and
administer revenue from Real Property taxes. The approval of Bill 78 is critical to
provide a stable base from which to begin protecting resources island-wide.
Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to testify on this important
legislation.
