Dear Angel,
Thank you so much for yow years of dedication and commitment to the
people of Hawaii. Yow wisdom and leadership are crucial at this time of
explosive growth in the Kailua-Kona area You have a history of careful
consideration and courage to make dit~icult but necessary decisions.
I am writing this letter to express my support for the Pualani Estates Makai
development. I attended the public hearing at King Kamehameha Resott on
April l2 and listened to the various opinions about the project. Although I
did not testify, I believe this project solves some of the critical infrastructure
problems facing Kona.
I agree with Ann Peterson's testimony that small neighborhood shopping
alleviates traffic congestion by allowirtg people to walk and bicycle to their
errands. This is the kind of sustainable community I hope to live in.
I also agree with Ctutis Tyler's comments on the need for more mauka-
makai corridors co facilitate optimal traffic flow and to create emergency
escape routes.
Another positive aspect of this project is that it is completely in compliance
with the newly passed General Plan Tf we are to contain sprawl and
maintain ow agricultural lands, we need affordable housing where
employment opportunities exist. Also, areas of dense population are more
easily served by mass transit options.

Finally, when I read in the paper last week that the developer was willing to
set aside acreage for a school site. 1 felt compelled to write you. I am the
relocation chair for Innovations Public Charter School. As you Lmow, ai~a
schools aze extremely overcrowded and the Aeparhnent of Education is not
addressing the problem. Our organization struggled for years to find a
suitable location for ow award winning school. Parents, students, teachers,
and community members must form public/private partnerships in order to
create educational opportunities for all the children of Kona. Charter schools
arc at the fortfront of community collaborations and public education
reform. This project could be a national model of visionary community
development.
Please consider the greater good when analyzing Puslani Estates Makai.
This project could be a national model of visionary community
develvpuieut. Children deserve a place where they are free to explore their
highest potential and realize their promising future. The highest goal of an
evolved society is to nurture old cultivate future generations. Please help by
approving this project and incorporating a small school site within the
development.
