Dear Angel,
As a long time owner of agricultural ranch land in Kona, I am writing to express my family's cpncern
with the restrictive language in Bill 80, specifically the ordinance amending Chapter 23, Article 3.
Division 1, Section 23-23. I urge you to vote against it. ,
I would agree that we should protect important agricultural land in Kuna and on the Biy Island.
However, there is too much land on the island designated as agriculture, which is of little or no
productive agricultural use. Until there is hettar irtentification of important agricultural lands as
opposed to unimportant ag lands, I believe it would not be appropriate for the County Council to
restrict it's decision making ability based on the idea that all agricultural lands should be treated the
same. This is particularly true in Kona where so much of the agriculture designated land in
unproductive.
Rather than restrictively trying to encumber all ag lands, good and bad, I think the County Council
should identify the lands that are tnrly of important agricultural usage. These lands and the
legitimate farmers and ranchers who sustain themselves on it should be protected from
encroachment by development. Bill 80 does not accomplish this in a meaningful manner and could
do more harm than good. I hope you will vote against it.
