Subject: I am a strong supporter of Resolution 95-05
Aloha, my name is Donald F. Wessels, Jr. and I live in Pepeekeo on the beautiful Hamakua coast of
the Big Island.
I am a strong supporter of Comprehensive Public Funding of Election Campaigns and would like to
see the Hawaii County Council pass Resolution 95-05.
There is a creeping dysfunction in our republic. It is the inordinate influence of the affluent on
our nation's political process. Private financial contributions to candidates or political parties
is eating away at the core of our democracy. Those with greater amounts of money have a greater
influence and access to elected officials. Our politicians have to return to those with most of
the money, instead of the people in general, to get elected to office. This sets up a election
system where tycoons get undue power over who can effectively run for elected office. In a system
like this the voice of "We the People," the foundation of our republic, are drowned out by those
few individuals or institutions with very deep pockets.
We need to stand up against this attack on our democracy by the overwhelming wealth of these
tycoons. Please, support Resolution 95-05 and Comprehensive Public Funding of Election Campaigns.
