HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 119 Draft 01 2004-2006 NtY Os y IJ~ COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII .h.er.M' RESOLUTION NO. 119 U5 A RESOLUTION WELCOMING SISTER-CITY SUMOTO CITY'S DELEGATION'l'O THE COUNTY OF HAWAII AND SUPPORTING THE COMMEMORATION AND CELEBRATION, FROM JULY 20 THROUGH JULY 22, 2005, OF THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF SISTERHOOD BETWEEN HAWAII COUNTY AND SUMOTO CITY. WHEREAS, Sumoto City, located on the largest island (Awajishima) in the Japan Inland Sea, and the Island of Hawaii, the largest island in the State of Hawaii, are similarly blessed with striking natural beauty; and WHEREAS, the process to establish asister-city relationship between Sumoto City and the County of Hawaii was started in June 1999 at the request of Kenji Kuroshima, a Hilo resident and former resident of Sumoto City; and WHEREAS, since the sister-city process began in June 1999 through August 2000, when the sister-city relationship was formally established, two prior Sumoto City delegations visited Hawaii County to pursue further asister-city relationship with Ilawai`i County; and WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii reciprocated and a delegation of County officials, twelve members of the Waiakea Intermediate School ukulele band, and members of the Hawaii Tropical Flower Council visited Sumoto City from July 19-23, 2000 to participate in their Japan Flora 2000 (International Gardening and Landscaping Exhibition) and Hawaiian Matsuri; and WHEREAS, during these exchange visits and correspondences between the representatives of Sumoto City and Hawaii County, officials on both sides have expressed strong support for asister-city relationship to be established; and WHEREAS, in response to this shared enthusiasm, sisterhood agreements were signed in Sumoto City by Mayor Stephen Yamashiro of Hawaii County and Mayor Keiichi Nakagawa of Sumoto City on July 21, 2000; and WHEREAS, on August 9, 2000, the Hawaii County Council adopted Resolution 282-00, which formally established asister-city relationship between Sumoto City and the County of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, since established five ears ago, this sister-city relationship has evolved and has been especially benei-icial, for bo h adults and students, in recognizing and emphasizing common bonds, particularly cultural, economic and educational, that over the long term will continue to have a mutual enefit to residents of both islands. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESO VED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it extends a warm alo and welcome to the Sumoto City delegation as we celebrate together our fifth anniversar of friendship and sisterhood. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED tha the Council supports Mayor Harry Kim's proclamation celebrating the "Fifth Anni ersary Of Sisterhood Between Hawaii County And Sister-City Sumoto City, From July 0-22, 2005." BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED TH T the County Clerk transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Mayor Harry im, the Honorable Mayor Jitsurou Yanagi, the Honorable Council Chairman Shigeru Ko atsu, and Protocol Officer Andrew Levin.
