Dear Chairman Higa and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to nominate the following individuals to the County of Hawaii Transportation
Commission:
Council District 2 - Ms. Kate Ahia is a 59-year resident of Hawaii. She is presently the
Coordinator of the Hilo Pier Greeting Project, and is also a member of the Big Island of Hawaii
Women in Travel Organization. Ms. Ahia is a past member of the Special Hilo/East Hawaii
Tourism Group, the Island of Hawaii State Port Task Force and Destination Hilo. She states that
she is not affiliated with any political party. pf confirmed, Ms. Ahia will serve a term to expire on
December 31, 2009. She will replace Robert Kawakone, whose term expired on December 31,
2004.
Council District 9 - Mr. Michael Sumja is a 7-year resident of Hawaii. He is currently retired.
From 1990 to 1999, he worked in Little River, California, as a ranger with the California State
Parks and Recreation, and managed the Glendeven Inn Bed and Breakfast. From 1970 to 1990,
he was CEO with a management consulting firm, Lee, Jackson & Bowe, in Los Angeles.
Mr. Sumja is presently the co-chair of the Kohala Coalition Against Drugs, and is also a member
of the Kohala Senior Citizens Club, North Hawaii Drug Free Coalition and the Kohala
Intergenerational Center. He states that he is a Democrat. If confirmed, Mr. Sumja will serve a
term to expire on December 31, 2006. He will replace Peter Hoffmann, who resigned when he
was elected a council member.
