RESOLUTION NO. 122 U'5
A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A VOLUNTEER FIRE
STATION WITHIN 'fHE AINALOA SUBDIVISION BY THE AINALOA COMMUNITY
ASSOCIATION
WHEREAS, the Ainaloa, Orchidland and Tiki Gardens subdivisons, serviced by the
Puna Emergency Access Road, is home to over fifteen thousand people; and
WHEREAS, during times of drought, the Puna region has historically had risks of range
fires, such as occurred in 1984 and 1989; and
WHEREAS, the Wao Kele `O Puna forest reserve, which is slated to be purchased by
the federal government and managed by anon-profit organization, abuts the Ainaloa subdivision
and poses a risk of forest fires affecting residents in the area; and
WHEREAS, the nearest volunteer fire station is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park
(HPP) and first responders would have to travel through HPP, across a difficult intersection with
State Highway 130 to access Ainaloa, Orchidland and Tiki Gardens subdivisions; and
WHEREAS, a volunteer fire station within the Ainaloa subdivision will assist
homeowners in Ainaloa, Orchidland and Tikli Gardens subdivisions with fighting residential tires
and with obtaining fire insurance for their prk~perty; and
WHEREAS, the Ainaloa Community Association is committed to fire safety and
education through the FireWise program; and
WHEREAS, the Ainaloa Community Association is ready to commit land, facilities and
manpower to establish a volunteer tire statiop within the Ainaloa subdivision; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOILVEll BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII, that the Hawaii County Fire'Department support the establishment of a volunteer
fire station within the Ainaloa subdivision wlhich will provide fire fighting and educational
resources for the future benefit of residents in the Puna region.
