Gentlemen,
I didn't have notes with me on Wed.,but T would like to give you a summary of what I
said. My main poin[ was that building an incinerator would be a mistake. Jrtcinerators don't get
rid of trash, they only turn it into air pollution and toxic ash. This would requve a special, lined
landfill for the ash. And, in spilt of all the scrubbers there will still be emissions of mercury, lead
and other toxic metals. Lead, in particular, is bad for young children, as it lowers their LQ.
Mercury is also a problem, both in the air we breath and in the fish we eat.
There are technologies that safely get rid of trash. Most are still in the development
stages. One member said that Japan has such a system in operation. T think this should be
researched. We need a good long-term solution to our trash problem- Since this will take time,
we also need ashort-term method to tide us over.
Recycling will divert some of our trash from the landfill. Perhaps this is not working in
California, but I know it is working in New Jersey, where T came from. Diverting green waste is
an obvious way to keep up to 35 % of material out of the landfill. We probably will also need a
new, lined landfill, at least until the long-term technology is here. 'there will probable always be a
mineral residue that will need landfilling.

resisting an incinerator so far. T encourage you to keep doing so.
