"Direct use" means non-electric applications of geothermal heat including dehydration, pasteurization, aquaculture and spas. Such enterprises can provide economic development opportunities without increasing the County's reliance on imported fossil fuels. An initial grant of $10,000 was awarded to set up a Working Group to inform the public about the direct use of geothermal energy, solicit input from the community regarding the acceptability of direct use, and address issues related to a feasibility study for a direct use geothermal enterprise park. A second grant of $100,000 has been awarded for the feasibility study. The initial grant required at least three (3) public information meetings. The first was held on April 21, 2005 at the Leilani Estates Community Center. Dr. John W. Lund (bio attached), Director of the Oregon Institute of Technology's Geo- Heat Center and an international expert in this field, will give presentations during additional public informational meetings scheduled for August 15 and 16, 2005. The Working Group felt that it would be of great benefit for the County Council members if Dr. Lund could also give a presentation before the Council. This will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about this issue and to interact with Dr. Lund. Thus, if possible, please place a presentation on direct utilization of geothermal energy by Dr. John W. Lund on your August 16, 2005 committee hearing agenda. LUND Dr. John W. Lund, PE, is the Director of the Geo-Heat Center and Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering Department at Oregon Institute of Technology, Klamath Falls, Oregon. He is the President of the International Geothermal Association, Past President and member of the Board of Directors of the Geothermal Resources Council and former Dean of Engineering and Industrial Technologies at Oregon Institute of Technology. Dr. Lund has worked in direct utilization of geothermal energy for over 28 years, and was one of the co- founders of the Geo-Heat Center in 1975. He has been Director of the Center since 1997. Dr. Lund received the Geothermal Pioneer Award for "Outstanding Achievement in the Development of Geothermal Resources" in 1997. He has been an invited lecturer at the geothermal schools at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and the United National University in Reykjavik, Iceland. He has performed consulting work in the U.S. as well as numerous foreign countries. He has written numerous professional papers and made presentations at many national and international engineering and geothermal conferences. He currently serves as editor of Oregon Institute of Technology's Geo-Heat Center Quarterly Bulletin.
