Committee is forwarded for your information and follow up. The committee,
comprised of knowledgeable citizens were very conscientious about the task and
their results meet with our approval.

RE: Leleiwi Community.j'Association proposal for PARKING NO PARKING
zones along Kalanianaole Street (from Richardson Beach Park to
Lokoaka Street)
Dear Mr. Nishimura:
Five individuals were involved in the survey of Kalanianaole Street;
three members from the Community Association, Elfie and Robert Wilkins,
Mark Marshall and Dexter Chaves, our Neighborhood Community Officer
and Ron Reilly, from the Mayoral Committee on Bicycle and Pedestrian
safety. These are our suggestions:
1. Designate the NO PARKING zone all along the MAUKA SIDE of
Kalanianaole and permit parking on the makai side.
# safety for beach visitors
if cars were to park on the mauka side of Kalanianaole
passengers, drivers and keiki would have to cross that busy
street to go to the beach and risk car traffic from the other
side of the street.
# tsunami escape roads
all streets leading to the escape roads are on mauka side
and most of the fire hydrants and utility_.poles are also on
that side, so it seems wise to keep the mauka side free of
parked cars.
# ease of compliance and enforcement
by keeping the no parking zone consistent along one side of
the street, it will be easier for drivers to understand and
police to enforce parking regulations.
2. Crosswalk at Oeoe Street
keep existing crosswalk for pedestrians who wish to walk to
Leleiwi Beach Park
3. Divide Kalanianaole equally on both lanes
the total width of Kalanianaole is everywhere no less than 30 feet;
we would like the road divided:
shoulder 5 feet 10 feet 10 feet _ _ feet

4. Rumble strips (Please see map)
place one or two sets of rumble strips just before speed limit
changes to 30 mph to make motorists aware of the change from
35 to 30 mph
There are no residences in that area as you can see from the map.
We had some concern about placing the strips only on the mauka
side of the road. Will motorists cross the center line in order
to avoid the round plates? If so, perhaps the strips should
run across both lanes of the street??
