Re: BILL 116 - Acquisition of Wai'aha Beach
Aloha, Chairman Higa and Councilmen:
I am writing to ask that you pass Bill 116. As you know, this bill
would give the neasssary funding to acquire Wai`aha Beach in
Railua-Kona.
Plans to develop Wai`aha Eieach have never been popular. In 1999, I
attended a standing room only, overflowing crowd at a hearing
regarding a development proposed for this area. The message before
that, and since then has been clear: Wai'aha Beach is an area oaf
critical nature to this community. Tts acquisition not a matter of
"if" but rather '°wlzen".
The pressure on ou:r natural resources especially our coastlines
is increasing dramaticeilly. It°s not enough to hope that
sidewalks and local shopping will balance the needs of a
burgeoning community. Natciral areas like this one must be
protected immediately if ere are to protect ourselves from the
social and envirorvnental costs of the type of urbanization which
is plaguing Oahu and Maui.
That protection, a•t this moment, depends upon you who sit befo~^e
us and the decisions you make today. As you contemplate allowing
new subdivisions on this island, you must do much, much more tai

protect the quality of life o$ island residents. That protection
lies heavily in the protection of nature.
I feel confident that you will all join in a unanimous decision to
pass this bill and to provide immediate acquisition of Honl's
Beach.
