Re: BILL 116 - WaPaha Beach (Honl's) acquisition
Dear Chairman Higa and Council Members,
I am writing in support of the Wai'aha Bay Beach Park land acquisition.
I believe this acquisition is an important step in the preservation of open space, given the booming building
and development occurring in the Kailua to Keauhou area.
Recent large-scale multi family units built in the vicinity of Wai'aha reinforce the need for the concurrent
establishment of recreational areas nearby.
The 1989 Hawaii County General Plan has a requirement under section K.- Recreation:
"The County of Hawaii shall adopt an on-going program of identification, designation and acquisition
of areas with recreational resources, such as land with sandy beaches and other prime areas for
shoreline recreation."
The plan also states that the existing recreational areas in the North Kona district are inadequate.
It goes on to say the 18,500 residents should have 91 acres of parks for community recreation.
(using the ratio of 5.0 acres for every 1000 people). Now that the population in Kona has more than
doubled since this 1989 ratio, it is even more to crucial that we acquire land for parks and open space in
close proximity to the centers of growth.
My vision is that present and future residents of Kona will be able enjoy a high quality of life here given the
opportunities of safe, affordable housing, of a community and recreational space close to home, and that
visitors have wily have another beautiful accessible beach to enjoy.
My family and I strongly support Bill 116 and the acquisition of this .68 acre beachfront parcel for the
purpose of building of Hawaii County's newest public beach park for all the residents of this island and
visitors to enjoy.
