Aloha Chairman Higa and fellow Council Members:
My family and I was fortunate to have grown up during a time when life in
Kailua Kona was a bit carefree- more "simple." Not only am I a child of
this area; born and raised but I was allowed to experience all ocean
activities off of Kailua-Kona which bring many happy memories to mind,
especially of growing upon the beach of Waiaha, also known as "Honl's -
Beach."
As the Council is aware my family and I lived in the house which sits
directly next to the Kona Reef Condo. (My foot prints are embedded in the
cement around the pool) I lived in that house until my early teens, after
a family tragedy I then moved mauka
Life was so simple then! I remember being able to fish, dive, swim, and
mainly surfing along side many of my friends on "Honl's," as many of those
who still surf there today continue to call it still. On any given day,
you would find at least three or more of us in ocean or on the beach,
(access) was always available to the Public.
Of course this beach holds sentimental value to me, some of my fondest
memories are as I remember playing on the beach as a young boy, hanging
out with my friends in the old Date tree, being one of the first "test
pilots" for Morey Boogie boards, (which was created on this beach in the
early 70s by Tom Morey who was a neighbor) and walking the beach picking
up "beach glass" with my mom. I was a constant witness to the beauty of
this little coastal area, as many local families came to gather reef fish
by "throw-net" and Wana from tide pools, on days that the surf was flat.
I waited anxiously for the day of the first Summer South Swell or the
start of the Winter's Storm break, as it brought in the high surf breaking
left and right, it became almost expected each season. Later in the early
80s I introduced my daughter to the ocean on this very bi=_ach.
My family and I urge you to consider'Bill 116' for future generations to
come, not just for me but for those who are seeing the "simple life" is
disappearing fast.
This is the last stretch of white sandy beachfront that isn't developed
yet. Please don't allow any commercial developement to happen here, this
would change the (access) to the water which has always been open to be
General Public for as long as I can remember.
When the Council allows the Parks & Recreation Dept. to purchase this
little piece of white sand, (the last open space on Alii Drive) it would
benefit the Communities and Generations to come. Life is too complicated
today, our keiki should be allowed to continue to be free to enjoy the
ocean like We did in our youth.
