ol" Ms. Kate Ahia and Mr. Michael Sumja to serve on the County of 1lawui'i 'I~ransportalion
Commission.
~1s. Ahia ICouncil DisUict is a 59-year resident of Ilawai'i and is not af~iliatrd with an}
political parts. She is currrnUy the ('oordinator of the I Iilo Pirr Greeting Project and a member of
the Rig Island of I lawai'i Women in'IYavd Organiralion. She was also a member of the Special
I lilo/Dust Ilawai'i tourism Group, Island ofllawai'i Stale Port'fask force, and Destination Milo.
If conlirmcd. Ms. Ahia ~~ill scar a Ierm that will end on December 31, 2009. Shc will replace
Rohcrt Ka~~nkonc, whose term ended on December 31. 2004.
A9r. Sumja ((lxmcil District 9) is a 7-year resident of I lawai`i, who is currently retired. From
1970-1990, Mr. Sumja was the CI?O of Lee, Jackson & Rowe, a management consulting lirm in
Los Angeles. From 1990-1999, he worked in I.iUle River, California, as a ranger with Uie
Caliliirnia State Parks and Recreation. and he also managed the Glendeven Inn Bed and Breakfast.
~1r. Sumja. ? Democrat. is presentl} the Co-chair of the KoI'iala Coalition Against Drugs, and is
aL~o a member of the Kohala Senior Cilii~cns ('tub. North Ilawai'i Urug Prcc ('oalition, and the
Kohala Inlcrgcnrralional Center. Ifcunfirmed, Mr. Sumja will serve a term that will end on
December 31, 20116. I Ir ~~ill replace Peter I loflinann, who resigned when he was elected to scar
on the County Council.
In response to a yucstion at todac's meeting, Ms. Ahia stated that one of the biggest problems at
I lilo pier ~~as the lack of civility among taxi drivers, and this is especially embarrassing when
wimcsscd by visitors. Council Member Virginia Isbell noted that there was a similar problem in
Kailas-Ikons. and she invited Ms. Ahia to go to Kona to observe the problem. Ms. Ahia
responded that this was a problem on other islands as wrll_ and that she would go Ui Kona in the
lulurr.

Mr. Sonya staled that he would be pleased to serve on the Commission, and that while he was not
familiar with all of the transportation issues. he has good organizational skills and would work
hard to he a productive member of the Commission.
I~hc Council Members commended Ms. Apia and Mr. Sumja for their willingness to scr~c, and
spoke in furor of their nominations.
