(2) To conduct an island-wide public awareness campaign on the mission of the Start Living Healthy Initiative, including the use of local cablevision and news media. (3) To encourage positive behavioral changes in health practices through fitness activities, smoking cessation projects and nutrition education programs. Objectives: (1) Changing behavior and encouraging positive health practices. (2) Combating our high rate of diabetes, primarily among adults. (3) Combating smoking. (4) Combating cholesteral and the high rate of strokes on our island. Comm. No. li,:f. To: ~ttt_ Kef. date r Form FR 9/03 Outcomes or Results: The following projects were conducted during this time period and aired via the local cablevision 27 twice a day for the duration of a month: 1. Aquatics Division: To promote physical fitness and weight control through special exercises as water aerobics and aquanastics, exercise videos, floatation devices, individual pace clocks, non- corrosive weights and kickboards were purchased to enhance these activities. 2. Exercise and proper nutrition Waiakea Recreation Center's Senior Exercise class: class met at Liliuokalani Garden, walked and exercised before returning to the center to focus on nutritious snacks to help lower cholesterol and high blood pressure. Two sessions were held. 3. Exercise and good nutrition at Kuhio Plaza, Honoka'a, Pahoa, Waimea and Hale Halawai: five communities were treated to fun exercises by our P&R staff and good nutritious foods by local chefs were highlighted. 4. Exercise and Nutrition Expo at Kuhio Plaza. Various exercise groups demonstrated and several demonstrations on healthy Coods were conducted. 5. Summer Fun Healthy Snacks and Fitness Program: during the months of June and July, we did a fitness and healthy snack program at the various Summer Fun sites. F.ach were done as individual projects. PE Instructors led the group in thirty minutes of exercises, afater which they enjoyed a healthy snack preparation and sampling session. Sites covered were: Yano Hall, Kailua Gym, Kohala Gym, Waimca Community Center, Honoka'a Gym, Papa'ikou Gym, Carvalho Park, Kawananakoa Gym, Andrews Gym, Shipman Gym, Pahoa Center, Mt. View Gym, Pahala Center and Na'alehu Center. Form PR'I/03 RECREATION DIVISION Department of Parks and Recreation County of Hawaii START LIVING HF,ALTHY Fiscal 2002-2003 Grant $50,000 Coordinator Hired to Implement and Conduct Projects: George Yoshida In September 2002, we conducted a Start hiving Healthy Fair at Prince Kuhio Plaza featuring food demos and exercise activities organized by the Department of Parks and Recreation. The food demos included use of taro, natural foods and ulu and presented by various local presenters. The exercise activities included cultural exercises, exercise for toddlers, martial arts and even line dancing. Approximately 2,000 persons viewed the event which also featured healthy food giveaways. This was featured on the local cablevision. In November 2002, we purchased approximately $8,000 worth of exercise supplies for the Aquatics Division (NAS, Kawamoto Pool, Pahoa Pool, Pahala Pool, Honokaa Pool, Laupahoehoe Pool, Kohala Pool, KCAC and Konawaena Pool) so they could do water exercise programs for their respective communities. More than ]0,000 patrons are expected to utilize these equipment during the year. These were featured on the local cablevision. May 5-9, 2003 We conducted several "Living Healthier" projects at various communities. In Pahoa, we featured vegetarian dishes along with cultural exercises; in Honokaa, we featured Beth Ann Nishijima of Nori's to do healthier cooking and incorporated aerobic exercises; in Waimea, Beth Ann Nishijima offered her healthy culinary skills which were enhanced by Chi Gong and Aikido exercises; in Kona, Chef Keo Valasquez offered his high protein vegetarian cooking along with Yoga exercises; in Naalehu, Mrs. Barrel featured cooking with ulu and taro and step aerobic exercises. More than 500 participated in this endeavor to promote exercise and healthier cooking, not to mention the thousands of viewers who watched it on the local cablevision. June-July 2003 Summer Fun Healthier Snack Project Papaikou, Pahoa, Andrews Gym, Kohala, Waikoloa, Waimea, Panaewa, Keaukaha, Kailua Gym, Waiakea Uka, Yano Hall, Carvalho Park, Shipman Gym, Mt. View Gym, Hale Halawai, Honokaa. Paauilo, Papaaloam, Hilo Armory and Pahala. Had healthy snacks and physical fitness programs at all 19 sites. Led children in 30 minutes of physical fitness exercises and a 30 minute nutrition education program culminating with healthy snacks which included a bottle of water, fresh fruit and vegetables. More than 1,500 children benefited from this program. This project was featured on the local cablevision. SLH Project Report Fiscal Year 2002-2003 Page 2 September, 2003 (Project extended) Healthier Lifestyles - Walk the Talk Encouraged P&R staff to start providing walking classes to all patrons at their sites. Provided several pedometers and blood pressure kits to every site to enhance their programs. Over 6,000 are expected to participate in this project on-going project. This project was featured on the local cablevision. October 2003-April 2004 SLH Project in conjunction with Elementary Schools (START LIVING HEALTHIER FROM ELEMENTARY GRADES) We did a 30-minute physical fttness program and a 30 minute nutrition talk to rural elementary schools and presented them with bottled water, water bottle and a 27 inch DVD/VCR TV. We covered the following schools: Naalehu Elementary, Pahala Elementary, Hookena Elementary, Honaunau Elementary, Kohala Elementary, and Mt. View Elementary. Over 3,500 children were serviced. All were featured on the local cablevision. June 2004 SLH Healthier Snacks for Summer Pun Conducted this project with the Department's Summer Fun program by promoting physical fitness and healthier snack education the children. We provided bottled water, and two fresh fruits to each child at the following Summer Fun sites: Pahoa, Yano Hall, Kohala, Waimea, Waikoloa, Yano Hall and Hawaiian Oceanview Fstates. Over 400 children were serviced. "Phis program was featured on the local cablevision. June 15, 2004 SLH Teen Fitness Program in Waikoloa Intensive Fitness supplies were purchased for the Teen Fitness Program held in Waikoloa during the 6 weeks of Summer. Teens enrolled in this intensive fitness program to enhance their athletic abilities. This project was featured on the local cablevision. June 25-26, 3004 SLH Hershey Track Sponsored ]0 athletes to attend the State Hershey Track Meet in Honolulu. The athletes were selected from the PbzR Track Meet. Partners in this venture were DOH Start Living Healthy; P&R; Schofield Barracks who provided overnight and meal provisions; Hawaii Recreation and Parks Association who provided 5 round trip air fares. All ten athletes brought home a total of 17 ribbons ranging fromist to Th place. Two from the Big Island (Aukai Akau and Jace Saplan) were selected to attend the Hershey Pennsylvania meet on Aug. 6-7, along with George [keda who chaperoned. This was featured on the local cablevision.
