Aloha. Council members!!!
I favor filing Bill 71 and, in the coming months, address the subterranean termite treatment required by
the building code: Section 5-1.0.72/Section 2516(c)3.
Several of us question whether the use of petrochemical based pyrethroids, such as Termidor and
Fipronil, is something that should be in the building code, because of the limited usefulness of the
treatments. "fhey are currently warranted for only one to three years and studies show that they arc
largely gone after 3-5 years in a wet environment. By comparison, basaltic termite barrier sand or
stainless steel mesh cost more initially and will last for years.
We will be addressing the economic implications to homeowners if the Building Code only allowed
basaltic termite barrier rock or stainless steel mesh.
We also will be looking at the implications of the environmental/economical impact to the Island if the
pyrethroid chemicals get into the sediments of our alkaline ponds the way they have to the stream bed
sediments of central California. (New data show that one-fifth of the central California valley sediment
samples are toxic to a standard testing species due to pyrethroids. See UC Berkley /Southern Illinois
