Rrucc McClure. amends Chapter 9 (I{Icctrical Code) ofthc liawai'i County Codc.
IDill 126 replaces Bill 69. which will he tiled during the August 3. 2005 Council meeting. After
discussions hete~ecn Department of Puhlic Works. Committee staff and the Legislative Research Branch
stall: it was decided that a new hill was the best way to present the proposed amendments. A summary
of the proposed changes to Sections I-16 is presented in table i~~rmal and attached to Communication 375.
I nr the past SK Vicars. the Counh~ has adopted various editions ofthc National I~;lectrical Codc. l~hc last
edition adopted was the 1993 I(dition. which was adopted on ,tune 1 7, 1994. The National I~:Iectrical
( ode is an c~ecllcnt code of minimum standards. I lowcver, certain sections of the Code du not apply to
bail construction conditions or situations. 'fhe intent of this bill is to adopt amendments to address local
condi(ium or situations.
I bore were Iwo cumnnmity meeting held, one in I lilo and one in Kona. to discuss the 1[Ieclriril Cute
amcndmrnLs. The nryorit~ of the participants were professional architects and engineers.
Council Mcmhcr Dr. I~ird I lulschuh asked if the Public Works' staff was comforlahlc with this new
~crsiun ofthe I~:Icctrical Codc. Director Rruce McClure confirmed that the staff is happy with thr hill.
Council Mcmhcr Ruh Jacobson commented that some minor repairs. such as changing switches. still
rryuirc a licensed electrician. pursuant to State law.
