The purpose r the landfill was learly stated in the Environmental
Ilmpact State nt (E!S), as the W st Hawai'i Regional Gandflll, which

fur organize ion resisted the Selected location because of its
Iproximlty to a South Kohala Resorts, whose tax revenues are a
primary drive for the economy lof Wawai'i County. Based on the
design, heig ,and screening rovisions included in the permit
$onditions an the County's sta ed commitment to waste diversion
Snd reduction in its ISWMP, we aciquiesced to the site.
lfhe design a d purpose of the proposed East Hawaii Regional Sort
Station, for w ich the funding is r)ow again before you, are unclear to
t~s. If its pu pose is waste reduction to the Hilo landfill until an
~Iternate disp sal technology caln be put in place, then we support
khe long ov rdue project. Howlever, if its purpose is solely to
Consolidate E st Hawaii refuse ~or long haul trucking to the West
Hawaii Regi nal Landfill, then yre are opposed to the funding for
Such a facility
It is our unde nding that there) are private sector providers willing
and able to to eon the task of wdste reduction. We believe that long
hauling is not economicalty, ethicality, ar enviromne~taiiy responsible,
and respectfu ly request that our~elected and appointed officials find
the waster action technolagy~ies) that best suits our County's
heeds and im IemeM iR(them).
We fully sup rt your efforts to ~mplement a sound Integrated Solid
Waste Manag ment Plan and all (forts to exclude long hauling as an
option.
Thank you f your leadership in finding and executing a responsible
Isolation, and or this opportunity jo express our views on this matter.
