Re.: Proposed Sign Ordinance Revisions, Bill No 280
Mr. Yasong.
I realize this is a very late communication. but I would appreciate it if you could distribute this to
the council members as you can, for consideration by the Public Works Committee.
Writing as a private citizen. and not representing any organization-. I wanted to make my views
known. Rather than deal with specific items \v hin the proposal. what I really want to do is
express my overall views of"the big picture.-
Whether one is a relative newcomer or a lifelong resident of the Big Island. one has to appreciate
the main attributes of our lovely island--its :still relativol:• unspoiled atmosphere and its natural
beauty. In dealing with the changes in the sign ordinance. one can get bogged down in the details.
I urge all council members to stand back and consid r w;lit'.ve are trying to do, which I believe is
help keep our island one of beauty and tranquillity. which °..•ill not only be aesthetically pleasing to
residents, but help attract visitors and their dollars to the island.
This summer I traveled to Alaska. which I understand strtrasles with many of the same issues
relative to small businesses and tourism as we do I !=r.ruck by how sign-free and clutter-free
their countryside was. I urge the council members so remember what the overall objective is.
Other cities and states have struggled with these issues: have no doubt that we can work through
she struggle in a way that preserves our scenic beauty. lets us all live in a clutter-free environment.
and still provides businesses with a means to com_:min_c._°.e in a tasteful and effective manner with
potential customers.
